SCIENCE

Intent

First and foremost, the children at Babdbury park are scientists! At Badbury Park Nursery and Primary school, we aim to stimulate curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way they do. Through the use of nature and our strong links to outdoor learning, we teach children to ask questions and appreciate how science can affect their lives and the world around them. We teach children methods of enquiry and investigative skills in order to stimulate creative thought and use exciting, hands on experiences to encourage this. We want our children to love science and remember and cherish their science lessons at school and embrace any scientific opportunities they are presented with. We want to equip our children with not only the statutory requirements of the science National Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

Implementation

At Badbury Park, Science topics are taught within each year group in accordance with the National Curriculum. Skills are layered across the years to ensure depth of learning and deeper understanding and allow for recall. Each year group will build upon prior learning from the preceding years groups to help to develop this layering of knowledge and skills. Knowledge organisers for each year group will be used and these will include key Curriculum information, vocabulary and notable scientists they may encounter during the topic. Use of the outdoors and nature will be intrinsic in the scientific learning that takes place at Babdury- opportunities for real experiences and hands on investigations will form the core of our science lessons.

In EYFS understanding of science is supported through the planning and teaching of ‘Understanding the World’ but is also developed in other areas of the EYFS framework.  Skilled practitioners foster curiosity and encourage explorative play within the environment. Children spend lots of time outdoors and are encouraged to use their natural environment around them to explore and observe.

Impact

The impact of the science curriculum at Badbury Park will lead to good progress over time across the key stages relative to a child’s individual starting point and their progression of skills. Our science curriculum and strong ties to nature will lead our children to be enthusiastic science learners who understand the world around them and are confident to ask questions. This will be evidenced in a range of ways, including pupil voice, children’s work and assessment against the National Curriculum objectives.
